MT. PLEASANT, Mich. — The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan (SCIT) is pleased to announce that it has joined the Midwest Tribal Energy Resource Association (MTERA). MTERA is a consortium of Midwest Tribes helping to increase Tribal self-determination through energy independence, knowledge sharing, and collective action.
Chief Ronald F. Ekdahl explains: “The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has been fortunate enough to reach several energy independence milestones with the construction of our substation at our Saganing Reservation. We look forward to participating in this organization by sharing our expertise and knowledge. All Tribes benefit when we work together to achieve our common goals of self-determination and exercise of sovereignty that help grow our communities.”
MTERA was formed in 2014 as an informal group of five Midwest Tribes who were passionate about energy issues. It has since grown and established a formal structure, obtained financing, and has identified opportunities to support Midwest Tribes’ energy initiatives. Chief Ekdahl continues, “As I mentioned during my Homecoming Community Meeting address, the electrical independence model that SCIT has created opens the door for future economic development projects in both Saganing and Mt. Pleasant. We look forward to helping other Tribes by sharing our experiences during this project and becoming a MISO market participant.”
