Cherokee Nation Principal Chief to Announce New Language Initiative

Cherokee National Treasure and linguist Durbin Feeling, a Cherokee speaker, was first to sign the Cherokee Speakers Roll Book when it was created in 2019 to identify and make record of living first-language Cherokee speakers.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. will announce a major Cherokee language initiative during the Celebration of Cherokee Speakers on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Cherokee Heritage Center.

The Cherokee Nation currently has about 2,000 first language Cherokee speakers. The tribe invests more than $6 million per year on its language department, Cherokee Immersion Charter School, Cherokee Language Master Apprentice Program, and Cherokee Voices, Cherokee Sounds Radio Show. Chief Hoskin will announce additional initiatives to preserve the language.

On Friday, as part of the 2019 Year of Indigenous Languages, the Cherokee Nation Language Program and the Master Apprentice Program have partnered to host a celebration of Cherokee Speakers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cherokee Heritage Center. The day will celebrate the Cherokee language and the carriers of the Cherokee language, and the celebration will include fellowship, entertainment and gifts for speakers.
