WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, Vice President Myron Lizer, and Council Delegate Paul Begay joined Navajo Gaming Interim CEO Brian Parrish to present a contribution totaling $120,720 to the Navajo Nation Fair organizers. The generous contribution will sponsor 16 events and activities the 73rd Annual Navajo Nation Fair scheduled for Sept. 2 to 8, 2019. In addition to the event sponsorships, Navajo Gaming also contributed more than $6,000 for daily rodeo tickets. The theme of this year’s fair is “Embracing Life Through Harmony, Health, and Faith.”
“We are very thankful to the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise, Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture, Navajo Nation Fair Office, and all of the hard-working employees for their contributions and dedication to make this year’s fair an enjoyable experience for all of our Navajo people and visitors,” said President Nez. “This is also a time for us to come together and support our local Navajo businesses, vendors, and entrepreneurs and we thank Navajo Gaming for supporting the Buy Navajo, Buy Local initiative.”
Navajo Gaming participates in various events at the fair, sponsoring more than $100,000 each year. This year’s events include the 4H Show where Brian Parrish, Navajo Gaming Interim CEO, purchases livestock and the proceeds are donated to local Navajo Nation senior citizen centers.
“We look forward to this event every year. This is another opportunity to show Navajo people Navajo Gaming Cares,” stated Brian Parrish, Interim CEO Navajo Gaming. “We commend each of our four properties and their vendors that provided this generous donation that will enable more than 100,000 visitors, including Navajo families of all ages, to gather together to enjoy all the Navajo Nation Fair has to offer.”
In addition to the 4H show, Navajo Gaming sponsors 15 other events as well as hosting its own tent that features Navajo Beef Jerky samples and other fun items. This year, Navajo Gaming is hosting the first-ever Navajo Beef Sliders Eating Contest. The competition at the fair is actually a finale event, bringing 12 finalists from each of the Navajo Gaming casinos who won preliminary contests. Semifinalists each qualified to compete for the grand prize of $5,000 in cash. The finale contest will be held Saturday, September 7 at 4 p.m. in the Navajo Gaming Tent on the fairgrounds.
“We greatly appreciate the generous contributions from everyone and the teamwork that is taking place to make the upcoming fair a safe and enjoyable event for all. We fully understand the need to continue improving the fairgrounds, pricing, and much more in the years to come as we continue to work together to make the annual fair a greater success every year,” stated Vice President Lizer.
The funds were contributed by each Navajo Gaming property and its vendors – Northern Edge Navajo Casino, Flowing Water Navajo Casino, Fire Rock Navajo Casino, and Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort and will support the following 16 different events and activities:
- Fry Bread Contest
- Song & Dance
- Cultural Night (Night Performance)
- Pow-Wow
- BBQ
- Nizhoní Arts Market
- Miss Navajo Pageant
- Indian Rodeo (All Around Men/Women’s Horse Trailers)
- Professional Bull Riding
- Wild Horse Race
- Elderly Fest
- Horticulture
- Jr. Livestock
- Sr. Livestock
- Masters Rodeo
- Baby Contest
Navajo Gaming Board Chairman, Quincy Natay said, “The Navajo Nation Fair has always been a time for our Navajo people to embrace our culture, celebrate life through harmony and Ke’, as we greet family and friends from near and far at each of the more than 20 various events.”
He added, “We are always pleased to work with the Navajo Nation Fair Boards and Committees to make each year a successful event.”
This year’s Navajo Nation Fair Concert Series also features the following performers:
- Candlebox – Wednesday, September 4th at 9:00 p.m.
- Aaron Tippen, Collin Raye, and Sammy Kershaw – Thursday, September 5th at 9:00 p.m.
- Flo Rida – Friday, September 6th at 9:00 p.m.
- Michael W. Smith and Danny Gokey – Sunday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m.
