Sept. 21: Pequot Museum Hosts Film Screening of Warrior Women  and New Exhibit Reception

Award-Winning Documentary Showcases Powerful History of Native American Women Activists; Exhibit Features Portraits and Voices of Native American Women 

 MASHANTUCKET, Conn.  The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center announced today it will host a screening of the award-winning 2018 documentary Warrior Women on Sat., Sept. 21, at 6:00 p.m.

Powerful and visually stunning, the 64-minute feature film tells the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk who, with her daughter Marcy, have fought for Native rights since the 1970s. Interconnecting past and present, Warrior Women explores how activist legacies are passed down – and the central, vital role women play in efforts toward indigenous liberation. For more information and to view the trailer, visit

A special viewing of and reception for the museum’s new art exhibit, Seeds of Culture: The Portraits and Voices of Native American Women, will precede the film screening from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Chris Newell, Pequot Museum education supervisor, will present an overview of the exhibit’s background and significance. Guests will enjoy the exhibit’s interactive experience, where portraits are accompanied by written and oral accounts, as well as hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar in the Mashantucket Gallery.

Entrance to the reception and film screening are included with general admission and free to those with a Smithsonian Day ticket.

Directed by Christina D. King and Elizabeth A. Castle, Warrior Women has garnered international acclaim, including 2019 Best Documentary at the 14th Vancouver International Women in Film Festival; Winner Best Doc Feature at San Francisco’s 2018 American Indian Film Festival®; and Best Documentary Feature at the 22nd Annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival 2019; and more.
