WASHINGTON — Voting mainly down party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives voted within the last hour to advance the impeachment probe of President Donald Trump. The historic vote was to set ground rules for the inquiry as their investigators prepare to go public with the case against Trump.
The final vote on the resolution was 232-196, with only two Democrats voting in nay; one Republican voted in favor, as did Rep. Justin Amash, a former Republican from Michigan who became an Indpendent this summer. The formal vote was intended to neutralize the Republicans’ attack that Democrats were conducting impeachment hearings without the benefit of a formal vote.
The only four American Indians serving in Congress voted down the party lines as well. Democrats Rep. Sharice Davids (Kansas-3rd District) and Rep. Deb Haaland (New Mexico – 1st District) voted yes, and Republicans Rep. Tom Cole (Oklahoma – 4th Disrict) and Rep. Markwayne Mullin (Oklahoma – 2nd District) voted no on the measure.

Today, Congresswoman Deb Haaland voted “yes” on a resolution outlining the next steps in the impeachment inquiry. H. Res. 660 provides rules for the format of open hearings in the House Intelligence Committee, including staff-led questioning of witnesses, and it authorizes the public release of deposition transcripts. The resolution also establishes procedures for the transfer of evidence to the Judiciary Committee as it considers potential articles of impeachment, and it sets forth due process rights for the President and his Counsel in the Judiciary Committee proceedings.
“This President has betrayed his oath of office. We have the responsibility to uphold our Constitution and ensure that no one, not even the president, is above the law, but President Trump and his Administration have obstructed this investigation at every turn. I cannot stand by while this President continues to abuse his office to enrich himself and his friends while New Mexicans are struggling to get by and puts his political interests ahead of our country. This vote makes it clear that we intend to deliver the truth to the American people so that the impeachment inquiry is fair and thorough.”
