SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Salt River High School is located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, near Phoenix, Arizona.

On Tuesday, the Salt River High School’s girls varsity volleyball team traveled to Anthem, Arizona to compete in a playoff match against the Caurus Academy charter school. During the match, the crowd began to heckle the Salt River players with racist gestures and war chants.

The unruly and racist crowd imitated traditional American Indian dances and performed the so-called tomahawk chop. Some even yelled out the racist term, “savages” to the girls.

The match was halted at the beginning of the fourth set and rescheduled for Friday afternoon at Desert Heights Prep Academy, a neutral campus.

The Canyon Athletic Association (CAA) investigated the Tuesday racist incident. In a statement, the CAA said they and “our member schools do not support racial discrimination in any form.”

The CAA reviewed the findings of both schools’ investigations, and decided it wouldn’t assign any sanctions to either school.
