Here are President Nez’ remarks:

“Today, America has lost one our most compassionate and outspoken civil rights leaders of all time — the Honorable Elijah Cummings. As the leaders of the Navajo Nation, we are saddened to learn of the passing of a great man, a protector of democracy, and a voice for the many throughout our country that seek justice and equality for all. We had the honor of meeting Congressman Cummings on a few occasions and each time he had nothing but kind words for our Nation.

Congressman Elijah Cummings inspired many throughout his lifetime and built a legacy that will last for many years to come. He was an advocate and a champion for Indian Country and for the Navajo People. His compelling voice for justice for all will remain in our hearts forever.

To his family, we offer our thoughts and prayers. We pray that you are comforted in knowing that your loved one is now with our Creator. May God bless you. Ahe’hee’”
