CRAZY HORSE, S.D. — With the Christmas holiday just 16 days away, the Crazy Horse Memorial is working hard to bring a memorable holiday to Lakota youth on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The memorial is currently seeking supporters to ensure that each student living in Pine Ridge School’s residence hall receives special Christmas gifts and important winter necessities.

Preferred gifts include toys, art sets, traditional and electronic games, bicycles, and sporting goods of all kinds. Young people also will receive blankets, winter clothing, hats and gloves.

“When families struggle to put food on the table, they have few opportunities to give gifts to family members, even their children,” said Jadwiga Ziolkowski, chief executive officer and director of public affairs. “We look forward to bringing Christmas joy to Pine Ridge’s young people — and making the holiday season a little bit easier for their parents and care-givers.”

Ruth Ziolkowski, who founded the Crazy Horse Memorial with her husband, sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, began this annual holiday-giving tradition. Supporters may deliver unwrapped packages, send checks made out to the Crazy Horse Memorial Christmas Fund, or contribute funds via credit card by calling 605-673-4681.

“If you’d prefer to make a financial donation, our staff is ready to take care of the shopping,” Ziolkowski said. “We love serving as Santa’s helpers.”

All charitable contributions are eligible for a tax deduction per IRS guidelines.
