WASHINGTON — The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) congratulates Judge Raquel Montoya-Lewis (Pueblo of Isleta) on her appointment as a justice of the Washington Supreme Court by Governor Jay Inslee on December 4, 2019. Montoya-Lewis is the first Native American to serve in this capacity in the state.

With more than 20 years of judicial experience, Montoya-Lewis served in both state and tribal courts where she oversaw an array of complex proceedings, hearings, and cases. Most recently she sat on the Whatcom County Superior Court. Prior to that, Montoya-Lewis spent numerous years serving in tribal courts as Chief Judge for the Nooksack Indian Tribe, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, and Lummi Nation Tribal Court.
NCAI celebrates this historic appointment of Montoya-Lewis as another example of a qualified, talented individual from Indian Country who dedicated her career to public service.
