PETERBOROUGH, N.H. — While answering a question posed by someone in a campaign rally, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Friday apologized for her past claim of American Indian ancestry.
Warren was in Peterborough, New Hampshire on Friday when she was asked by a prospective voter to explain the confusion caused by her American Indian ancestry claim. Right-wing groups have long falsely accused Warren of using her American Indian ancestry to get jobs. Investigative reporting by the Boston Globe found the accusations Warren benefited from checking the “Native American” box when she was in academia are unfounded.
“Never had anything to do with any job I ever got or any benefit,” Warren said. “But even so, I shouldn’t have done it. I am not a person of color. I am not a citizen of a tribe and I have apologized for confusion I have caused on tribal citizenship, tribal sovereignty and for any harm I have caused.”
At an American Indian presidential forum in Sioux City, Iowa, Warren apologized “for harm I have caused before a group of American Indian leaders.
Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.), a tribal citizen of the Laguna Pueblo, was named a co-chair of Warren presidential campaign late last month.
