Supporters for Mauna Kea Seek Meeting with Berkeley Astronomy Department

BERKELEY, Calif. — On October 15 (day following Indigenous People’s Day) Bria Puanani Tennyson and other Native Hawaiians, educated students about the people of Mauna Kea, and how the native people will resist the telescope on their sacred mountain..

Johnnie Bobb, chief of the Western Shoshone National Council and Yomba Shoshone Tribal Council member came to support the Hawaiian students and people. He sang and prayed in his own language to support the Hawaiian students and to protect the mountain.

After the rally, Dr. Kalama Niheu, tried to set up a talk and have a dialogue with the astrology department. Some of the supporters walked to the Astronomy Department and tried to set up a meeting.

The group marched to the astronomy department took an elevator to the office and gave a note to the front desk and asked for a meeting. The group was promptly asked to leave with no word on the meeting. The office was too busy studying the cosmos to see the people right in front of them.
